Victorian Essex Crystal Stag Intaglio Pendant
£2,250.00

An heirloom to capture both the artistry of the Victorian era and the eternal spirit of the natural world…

This striking 19th-century 15ct gold Essex crystal locket pendant is a superb example of Victorian artistry, rich not only in craftsmanship but also in symbolism.

The centerpiece is a large, finely executed Essex crystal intaglio, reverse-carved and hand-painted beneath the domed crystal. In this historic technique, the crystal acts as a magnifying lens, allowing for a three-dimensional illusion that makes the painting appear to float within the gem and appear almost life-like.

With exquisite precision, this intaglio reveals a stag in the Scottish Highlands, poised mid-stride as if just emerging from the morning mist. His antlers, strong and branching skyward, crown him as a noble guardian of the wilderness; an image of majesty, strength, and quiet dignity. The backdrop, soft and atmospheric, heightens the scene, evoking the untamed beauty of Scotland’s wild landscapes. The painting is reminiscent of The Monarch of the Glen, an oil painting of a red deer stag completed in 1851 by Sir Edwin Landseer, commissioned to hang in the Palace of Westminster, in London.

The intaglio is framed by a smooth, glowing 15ct yellow gold border, finished with delicate beadwork detailing to the top bale, adding refinement and 19th-century flair. Originally created as a locket, the reverse compartment may have once held a keepsake close to heart.

In Victorian symbolism, the stag was admired as a noble creature, representing strength, courage, and renewal. In Scottish culture, it is also a powerful emblem of the Highlands, embodying freedom and an untamed spirit. This miniature work of art, whether worn or kept as a treasured memento, is truly a unique talisman to celebrate the majesty of nature.

'My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here, My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer; Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe, My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go. '

~ Robert Burns
