This rare and unusual Portuguese pearl and diamond lyre ring is a breathtaking antique heirloom.

 

Formed in 18ct gold with Portuguese assay marks, the delicately twining scroll shoulders lead the eye elegantly up to a hollow basket, rimmed by glittering rose cut diamond accents and topped by a golden lyre, set with delicate seed pearls.

 

The lyre, a stringed instrument used especially in ancient Greece to accompany lyrical poetry, is often associated with the god Apollo and the hero Orpheus, and is known to be symbolic of wisdom, harmony and the arts. Apollo himself being the god of music and prophecy, the lyre remains a symbol of musical excellence as the logo for Steinway & Sons, and has been used metaphorically to refer to the work or skill of a poet.
