1940s Sentimental Gold Diamond Signet Ring
£595.00

Crafted in rosy 9ct gold in the 1940s, this signet ring is beautifully designed, centred by a single old cut diamond set within a star-like engraving upon the signet face. The diamond’s antique sparkle feels perfectly suited to the piece; sincere and enduring, like a far-away star.

But it is the inscription hidden to the reverse that transforms the ring into an heirloom with history, a love story at it’s heart. Slanted text inscribes: “Vera to Jim 3/3/46”

Dated just months after the end of the Second World War, the engraving anchors the piece within one of the most emotionally charged moments of the twentieth century. By 1946, the world was emerging slowly from years of separation, uncertainty and loss. Gifts exchanged in those years carried an intensity of feeling - they were tokens of devotion, survival, and hope for a brighter future.

We can only imagine Vera choosing this ring for Jim at a time when life itself must have felt truly precious. The single diamond becomes symbolic; a point of light after years of darkness, a star emerging from the night. It is not only a signet ring, but a remembrance, of two names, of a time we can never forget, and of a world learning to hold on to hope again.

“I wondered if he was looking up at that same moon, far away, and thinking of me as I was thinking of him.”

-  Vera Brittain
