20th Century WW1 'Poppy' Keeper Ring
This beautiful early 20th century 9ct gold keeper ring features intertwining floral motifs of ropework and poppies. The gifting of a ‘keeper’ ring is said to represent the notion of ‘keeping one’s heart.’
Bearing hallmarks for Chester, 1919, just after World War One, the sentiments behind this particular piece strike a moving chord. Poppies are a symbol of remembrance and a hope for peace, while ropework and knot designs in antique jewellery have been worn to symbolise eternal bonds, and the linking of two hearts. While we may never know its true story; where it’s been, who it was worn by, and what it’s personal meaning may have been, there is most certainly a story here, and we can only imagine what this ring might have to say if it could tell the story of its wearer.
‘The torch; be yours to hold it high…’
~ In Flanders Fields, John McCrae
