18th Century Gold Posy Ring
A surviving heirloom of 18th-century devotion, this Georgian gold posy ring carries with it the quiet poetry of a promise made long ago.
To the interior there is an inscription in elegant italic script with the long ‘s’, reading “My Love to thee Shall Constant be.”
These words, softly worn against the skin, speak of loyalty, constancy, and the enduring nature of affection in an age when posy rings were exchanged as intimate tokens; a promise more private than a letter, more lasting than a spoken vow.
The term posy ring comes from the word ‘posy’ or ‘poesy,’ derived from the word ‘poetry’ to mean short rhyme. Posy rings were most often used to communicate secret messages of love, and were popular from the late medieval period onwards. Inscribed to the interior of the band, the wearing of the words against the skin was believed to strengthen their poignancy.
“Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds.”
