Victorian ‘Night & Day’ Locket Necklace
A stunning silver Victorian oval locket pendant with a ‘night and day’ nature design to the cover. This beautiful antique locket features an owl flying over a lake against the night sky on the left, and a diving kingfisher under the sun on the right, rendered in bright cut engraving and warmed by rose tone metal decoration the split the scene diagonally across the centre.
The locket pendant is hallmarked for Birmingham, 1880, together with maker's mark M.J.G and is strung on a chunky silver hallmarked fancy link chain necklace. The locket opens to reveal a four-leaf clover, dried and pressed behind glass on the left hand side, a symbol of Goodluck. The right side of the locket has been left bare for your own keepsake or token.
Lockets rose in popularity during the Victorian era for their sentimentality, often given as gifts for the commemoration of significant personal events, for love, or to remember someone who had passed on.
“How clear she shines ! How quietly I lie beneath her guardian light; While heaven and earth are whispering me, " To morrow, wake, but, dream to-night."
~ Emily Brontë, How Clear She Shines
