Art Nouveau Mythological Griffin Brooch
A rare antique brooch from the Art Nouveau era, formed in 14ct yellow gold and layered in a gleaming high-carat gold coat.
This fantastical piece features a griffin perched gallantly upon a scroll frame, with a lustrous pearl clasped in its mouth. A delicate drop pearl hangs elegantly from the base of the brooch. This mythological beast is a powerful guardian. Formed from the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, it has been a symbol of strength and courage throughout history.
Fantastical beasts are a recurrent feature in Art Nouveau jewellery, often depicted flying, or about to take flight. These pieces, with their flowing, curving lines that seem to move and shift before your eyes, feel alive with a particular kind of magic.
Note: The back of the brooch has a firm stainless-steel pin. There is slight evidence of historic repair to the left wing.
“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”
~ W.B. Yeats
